Fighting tournaments have been played out for thousands of years originating in some parts of Egypt and Africa then spreading in to Southern Europe. These fights were bare fisted and it is well documented that some of the opponents were unwilling. The first Ancient Greek Olympic fights were held in 688BC. The Ancient Greeks believed that the God of Olympus played the game. I think we can safely say that even this far back in history, betting would have taken place.

In 1743 the first rules of boxing were introduced by John 'Jack' Broughton who is known to be the Father of English boxing. The rules included the use of gloves although only in training, competitors had to break after a fighter went down and a three foot square in the ring was introduced. These were introduced after Broughton seriously injured his opponent who later died.

More recently, professional boxing is as popular as ever as is Boxing Betting. In 1960 Cassius Clay, later known as Mohammad Ali, became the most famous boxer in the world and the US boxing fraternity laid claim to many boxing titles. However, British boxers were making their mark to claim substantial world titles too. 1987 saw Terry Marsh's victory in Light-Welterweight, Duke McKenzie won several titles from 1988-93 in Fly, Bantam and Super Bantamweight, the great Nigel Benn won Middleweight titles in 1990, 1992-96, eccentric Chris Eubank claimed multiple Middleweight belts in 1990-91, 1991-95 and in 1995-1996 the lovable Frank Bruno held titles in the Heavyweight category. Maybe the greatest British boxing achievement is placed firmly at Lennox Lewis's door after winning Heavyweight titles in 1993-1994, 1997-2001, 2001-2004. Present day, David Haye holds the world title at Cruiserweight level which he won in 2007.

Today, many of the World Boxing Champion fights are played out in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, an ideal location for Boxing Betting Odds. An example of a recent fight to take place was between British Mancunian Ricky Hatton and Brooklyn’s Paulie ‘Magic Man’ Malignaggi on the 22nd November 2008.
